Before and after

From "is it ready?" to a report you can act on.

Friends say they like it. Contests send a form letter. Coverage tells you what a reader saw on page 61 and what to do about it.

Before: the writer's note (sample)

NORTH OF NOWHERE. Feature, drama, 108 pages. A widowed lighthouse keeper on a Maine island finds a stranger's boat and hides him from the mainland police through a three-day storm. I've done four drafts. My writing group likes Ida but says the middle is slow, nobody says where. Is it ready for Nicholl and the Austin fest, or do I keep going?

After: from the coverage (sample)

Logline (ours): When a grieving lighthouse keeper shelters a wounded stranger from the police through a three-day storm, she must decide whether the man she is protecting is a victim or the reason her husband's boat never came back.

The problem, by page. The stranger's secret is given to the audience on p. 61 (the radio call), so for 32 pages Ida is the only person in the room who does not know, and the storm does the waiting for her. Move the reveal to p. 80, or give Ida a decision on p. 70 that costs her something.

What works. Ida's refusal to speak her husband's name until p. 94 is the best choice in the script; the ending earns it. The island supply-boat scenes (pp. 12, 44) are the only places the outside world feels real.

The six questions · sample

Premise. Can the story be said in one sentence with a person, a want and a thing in the way? Would a stranger want to know what happens?

Structure. Does something change the direction of the story around pp. 25–30, the midpoint and pp. 80–90? Where do the pages wait?

Character. Does the lead make a choice that costs something? Could the supporting cast be swapped without loss?

Dialogue. Cover the names: can you tell who is speaking? How much is said that the picture already shows?

Questions
Does it say Pass, Consider or Recommend?

Yes, on the script only. We do not grade you as a writer, and a Consider is not a promise that anyone will buy it. The six scores and the page notes are the useful part; the verdict is the one line you can compare with a contest's.

Who reads it?

Our team reads every page and writes the report against the six criteria studio readers use. No celebrity reader, no name-dropping, no five-minute skim: every note points at a page, and the synopsis is in our words so you can see what actually landed.

Can you send it to producers or contests?

No. We never forward your script anywhere and we have no deals with contests, managers or producers. Your script stays yours; the report is for you.

Pay by card after you get your order code: $69 · £55 incl. VAT · A$105 · C$95. Up to 130 pages; longer scripts by email first. Late means a refund.
